Experience and advice on transit node operation
I recently setup a small transit node (rnsd) on an Android device using localtonet to expose the service. I configured a discoverable backbone interface (no IFAC) (stamp_cost=24), a TCP client interface for bootstrap discovery and went ahead and set "discover_interfaces = yes" in my config. To protect my IP on outbound connections, I installed the free ProtonVPN app and went on my merry way. Over the course of 2-3 days my tunnel logged ~13GB of bandwith which seemed like quite a bit, but I didn't really have a good baseline to go off of. Then randomly I saw the VPN had disconnected and I come to find out that my account had been suspended. For a free VPN though, 13GB of bandwidth over a couple days doesn't seem to unreasonable, but I dug into the IP requests logs on the tunnel and wow, 874 unique IPs pinged that tunnel over 2-3 days. Lot's of Russian IPs, lot of traffic from a single Swiss VPN IP, and a decent amount of US based and Europe based IPs. I pumped the brakes on hosting the node for now, but I was curious to hear feedback from the community if folks running transit nodes have had comparable volumes of traffic and what strategies people are employing when hosting public TCP nodes.

One interface uses about 10 MB per day just for announces. And don't forget file attachments, phone calls, and syncing the propagation nodes.
